In this historic rendition, women drawn from Richmond’s vibrant theatre and film community portray nine delegates to the Second Virginia Convention, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Henry Lee and of course, Patrick Henry.
Directed by Dr. Jan Powell, the former Artistic Director of Richmond Shakespeare, this special production was inspired by and commemorates the passing of the 19th Amendment in August 1920, which gave women the right to vote and at-long-last participate in our representational democracy.
Casting female actors in traditionally male roles is a unique and deliberate way to shift our modern perspective, allowing us to better hear the profundity of Henry’s arguments, and more fully comprehend America’s relentless pursuit for liberty.
