Scarlett Miranda Hill (above) will perform the “Liberty or Death” speech as part of this free lecture on the history of St. John’s Church.

Executive Director lecture and "Liberty or Death!" presentation by a Hanover County student.

St. John's Executive Director Stephen Wilson will give a free talk and will discuss the history of St. John's Church and its churchyard, the oldest in the City of Richmond. Other topics include the events that led to the Second Virginia Convention, a deep dive into March 23, 1775, and an overview of the work the St. John's Church Foundation takes on. As part of this free program, Scarlett Miranda Hill, a Hanover County homeschooled student who recently graduated at the age of 16, will perform Patrick Henry's unforgettable speech.

House Rules for Historic St. John’s Church

  • We encourage masks but they are no longer required.

  • Seating is first come, first served.

  • There is no food, drink, gum, candy, strollers, backpacks or firearms permitted inside the church.

  • Bags larger than 16 x 16 x 8 are prohibited inside the church. Any and all bags are subject to inspection. Please leave backpacks and bags inside your vehicle as we have no place to store them.
