Save our Historic Meneely Church Bell!
May 26 Kicks off our Summer Season — from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day we offer a Liberty or Death Reenactment EVERY SUNDAY. It’s our favorite time of year as thousands of people from all over Virginia, the United States, and the world, come to witness the remarkable portrayal of Patrick Henry’s liberty or death speech inside the place it actually happened, Historic St. John’s Church, still standing since 1741.
Since 2016 our bell has been slowing down, and now it is silent.
Our bell needs structural repair; it cannot be rung safely.
Fortunately we have an amazing young lady on our side: Miss Madeline Herring, the current State President of the Virginia Society of the Children of the American Revolution (CAR). CAR is the oldest patriotic youth organization in the nation. Madeline’s State Project theme is “The Roar of the Revolution, a play on Patrick Henry’s nickname, “The Voice of the American Revolution.” and her goal is to raise $10,000 toward the restoration of the bell.
What do we need to do?
replace the bell wheel
replace the badly rusted headpiece assembly and crown bolts
service and lubricate the gummed up bell yoke pins and pillow blocks
replace the rusted and clapper pin and missing bell clapper spring
How much will it cost?
$15,000 in total. The repair work will cost $13,690. Our Preservation Director will oversee the project at a cost of $1,310 to cover wages.
How can I give?
