St. John’s Worship Ministry
Our Parish survey last year reconfirmed that worshipping is the heart of why we come to St. John’s. Through our worship, we seek a greater knowledge of God’s Love and our responsibility to share that Love with others. Our services at St. John’s are eucharistically centered with a recognition for us of the sacred Presence of God in our personal lives and in the larger world.
Sunday Services:
The 8:30 service is normally a Rite II liturgy without hymns but with the Eucharist and homily.
The 11:00 service is a Rite II liturgy with hymns and homily. (On the 4th Sunday of those months with 5 Sundays, Rite I is the liturgy for both services).
A special service of healing follows both services on the first Sunday of the month.
On months with a Fifth Sunday, there is a single service at !0:00 a.m. so that the whole Parish can celebrate together the Eucharist , homily and hymns. This service is followed by a brunch in the Parish Hall.
Retreats
The Shrine Mont Retreat has been restarted beginning the Spring of 2007. Individuals and families travel to the lovely diocesan mountain retreat near Mount Jackson, Va. for fellowship, study, relaxation and worship. We are looking forward to continuing this annual Spring adventure.
Our Music Program and Special Music Events – Music is a very important part of our 11:00 a.m. worship service. We have an excellent organist and choir director. And our choir, though small in numbers, adds to the worship experience for those who attend this service.
This Spring we have enjoyed the VCU jazz trio playing sacred anthems for worship service and informal jazz in the Parish Hall, at our coffee hour.
On May 19th, we hosted the Richmond Harp Singers in our Parish hall for their practice session and sing-a-long for those who came to listen. It was a treat we are looking to repeat.
Future Music Events:
We are hosting trumpet player Kyle Hermann to provide special patriotic music during our July 1st worship service, on August 20th Melissa Sleeth and Rebecca Gill, clarinet soloists, will be providing special music for our 11:00 worship service, and more special music events will be forthcoming as the fall and winter season progresses.
