St. John's Church Calendar of Events

All are welcome to join us for the events listed below. Information on our regular worship services or
tour operations can be found by visiting the web pages highlighted.

Daily Guided Tours
You can experience the historic significance of St. John's Church by taking a tour led by one of our expert guides.

Hours of Operation

Monday-Saturday 10:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Sunday 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

The last tour of the day begins at 3:30 p.m. The grounds and gift shop are open until 4:00 p.m. each day.

Tours are on the hour and half-hour and last approximately 20 minutes. The grounds are suitable for a walking tour and each paid admission includes a map of the grounds, which shows the location and description of buildings and gravesites.

"Happy Birthday, George Washington!"

Did George Washington really have wooden teeth? Did he throw a silver dollar across the mighty Potomac River? This Presidents' Day, visit St. John's Church and meet President George Washington. President Washington will talk about his life, his adventures as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and his experiences as the first President of the United States of America. Enjoy birthday cake and punch in the Visitor Center, take a scavenger hunt in the graveyard, and celebrate the birthday of one of our country's greatest leaders. MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts is the first statewide celebration of its kind. Between March and June of 2010, thousands of special events will occur to honor contributions by women to arts and culture. Any individual or group can participate by presenting at least one public program focused on women.

St. John's Church's cemetery is the final resting place of Elizabeth Arnold Poe, Edgar Allan Poe's birth mother and an accomplished stage actress in her day. Eliza was known for her theatrical versatility, her comedic skill, and her beautiful singing voice. She was twenty-four when she passed away in Richmond in 1811, and at the time of her death she was on her way to achieving national stardom. Eliza Poe will tell about her tragically short life story and perform selections from her vast repertoire.
