Building and Grounds Ministry

The Church grounds and structures:

The Church building whose central part dates from 1741.
The cemetery.
The Visitor’s Center in the rear to the right of the church (former Sunday School building)
The Parish Hall located to the right of the church on entering.
The Nursery Building located to the rear of the church)
The Gate House (small chapel- looking building) to the rear and to the left of church.
The Parish Center (Queen Anne building and its rear garden) located across 24th street to the right of the church yard.

It can be convincingly argued that the Building and Grounds program at St. John’s is  central to many of St. John’s other ministries  Worship takes place in the sanctuary;  Christian education takes place in the Parish Hall and the Parish Center; our welcoming ministry of hospitality and the telling of the story of Virginia’s famous debate for freedom and independence takes place everywhere on the church site.
It is even likely that Native American burial grounds were located here as well .

Being part of our B&G ministry can be hands on as we tackle the small tasks associated with preventive maintenance or the daily needs of old buildings and the cemetery and grounds that surround them.  These are not always glamorous tasks, but they are extremely necessary for day to day maintenance and upkeep. It is so important that the buildings and grounds remain welcoming to worshipers and visitors to this sacred and historic place.

St. John’s is embarking on Project 400 in conjunction with the St. John’s Foundation. This project looks at both the preventative maintenance needs of the Church and the long term needs of supporting the building and the grounds. The support of our buildings and our grounds can be made in time, expertise, labor, or monetary donation.  Parish members or friends will find purpose in this ministry.  For more information, please contact the Parish Administrator at 649-7938.
